The council has finalised the borough's list of historically important and interesting buildings following consultation with residents and the owners and users of the buildings.
The List of Locally Important Buildings includes residential, cultural, religious, commercial and industrial buildings, monuments and statues at 376 different sites. The list will take effect from 1 July.
The places on the list are buildings or structures of local architectural or historical interest which contribute to to a streetscape or rural landscape; they may also be of interest because of a historic connection or have other local community significance.
Being on the List of Locally Important Buildings is not the same as buildings being listed as Grade I, Grade II* or Grade II as these buildings come under stronger statutory control. However, the local list will provide identified places with additional protection through the planning process as there will be a presumption against the demolition and redevelopment of them. It will also provide an additional basis for the council to reject poorly designed extensions or alterations to the buildings.
Planning Portfolio Holder, Councillor Hannah David, said: "The development of a local list of important buildings has protected a unique stock of buildings in the borough which contribute significantly to the quality of the built environment.
"There is a wide range of buildings on the list, many of which are public so they are places that are used and valued by local communities.
"It is the first time the borough has had such a list so it's a most welcome development in protecting local heritage for generations to come."
