Non-dependants

If someone aged 18 or over lives with you, such as a son or daughter, then this may affect the amount of benefit you are entitled to. This person is referred to in the calculation of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support called a non-dependant.

In some cases a deduction is made that is intended to reflect the fact that any non-dependant will be making a contribution towards household expenses. Amounts vary depending on circumstances.

The deduction rates are reviewed for each financial year. The rates effective from  April 2016 to March 2017 are shown in the table below:
