New complex-needs service in Hertsmere

Last Modified December 21, 2021

An amazing new complex-needs service for those escaping the revolving door of homelessness and rough sleeping has been launched in Hertsmere.

YMCA Borehamwood has been created in partnership with One YMCA, Hertfordshire County Council and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to provide a much needed service for some of the most vulnerable in the community.

This bright and colourful hostel offers 24 previous rough sleepers in the community a pathway to independence with both specialist support and a safe comfortable place to call home.

A group of people gather round a single bed at YMCA Borehamwood.

Representatives from across Hertsmere Borough Council, One YMCA, Hertfordshire County Council and other partners visit the new complex-needs service.

One of the key aspects of the dynamic pathway to independence is delivering the right support, in the right place at the right time.

One YMCA has created a psychologically informed environment, bringing everything together in one place. The specific colours, moving from nature and healing, trust and loyalty, through to creativity and cheer are combined with person centric, trauma-informed support.

At all stages and for all residents the YMCA Borehamwood service is directly targeted to the needs of each and every individual to help them move through the pathway.

Mark Turner, Director of Operations said: “With so many awful things that have happened as a result of COVID over the past two years this is such an amazing result, and I am so proud and grateful to all of those involved in working together to deliver a service that really can help deliver an end to rough sleeping in the area.”

Councillor Jean Heywood, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Transport, said: “I'm so proud that Hertsmere Borough Council is a part of this project. This scheme builds on the work we, as a council, undertook before and during the pandemic to reach out to individuals who face an uncertain future and help support them into longer-term accommodation.

"I want to thank everyone who is working so hard to support the residents at YMCA Borehamwood and help them on these first steps of a difficult journey. This scheme is already making a difference to the lives of residents, which as we approach the festive season, is the best kind of gift that can be given.”
