A successful fitness programme will soon be running its next course, giving Hertsmere residents the chance to get fit and lose some weight.
The Shape Up programme is aimed at men aged 18 to 65 with a Body Mass Index of 30 or over and consists of a 90 minute weekly session, which breaks down into a 30-minute educational segment followed by a 60-minute physical activity session.
The next sessions are due to be held in Potters Bar from 15 April, every Monday between 7.30pm and 9pm at Cranborne Primary School. Additional courses will take place in Bushey, starting in September 2019 and Borehamwood in January 2020.
The council’s Principal Revenues Officer Andrew Forbes lost four stone while participating in the programme.
He said: “I was initially referred to the programme by my doctor and eventually signed up last January having decided that I needed to do something different as I was losing motivation trying to lose weight and get fit on my own.
“The coaches were really friendly and I was with 25 to 30 men who were there for the same reasons as me. The short educational session would involve a weigh-in and talks on various topics, such as nutrition and lifestyle factors. This gave me the tools required to start losing weight and make changes. This would be followed by an exercise session such as circuit training or football. You worked at your own pace, getting plenty of encouragement.
“It’s made a massive difference to me both mentally and physically, I feel more confident and outgoing since losing the weight, I have more energy and have been able to take up five-a-side football again.
“I would highly recommend the course to anyone wanting to make a change to their lifestyle and fitness. It provided me with the springboard I needed to make a positive change to my lifestyle for the good of me and my family.”
