Changing nappies? Choose reusables!

Last Modified March 29, 2021

Join the HERTS Reusable Nappies scheme for 15% off nappies and accessories.

The challenge
With around 35,000 children in nappies in Hertfordshire at any one time, it is estimated that nearly 16,000 tonnes of disposable nappies are discarded in Hertfordshire’s household waste bins every year, equating to nearly half a tonne of nappy waste per year for every child in disposables, and costing £1.7 million in disposal charges annually.

The solution
In order to reduce this mountain of waste, which can take centuries to break down in landfill sites, Hertfordshire’s WasteAware Team is encouraging the parents and carers of children in nappies to make a material change. WasteAware is confident that suitable reusable nappies are available for every child in Hertfordshire and aim to make reusables the nappy of choice. They’ve launched the HERTS Reusable Nappies scheme - www.wasteaware.org.uk/ReusableNappies - to make changing nappies as easy as possible.

The HERTS Reusable Nappies scheme offers an online One Stop Shop where Hertfordshire parents and carers can:
• Receive support and guidance on the different nappy types, terminology used, what’s needed and how to get started, as well as great Q&A, hints and tips on all aspects of reusable nappies. There will be even more exciting content including videos and live events from friendly experts who’ve used reusable nappies themselves during national Reusable Nappy Week running 19 to 25 April 2021
• Engage with partnering suppliers for an exclusive 15% discount for Hertfordshire residents on purchases of a wide selection of reusable nappies and all the essential accessories, including increasing numbers of eco-living products.

Helena Jackson, WasteAware Co-Ordinator and leader of the HERTS Reusable Nappies scheme, explains: “Many parents and parents-to-be want to protect the environment and reduce their waste. Choosing reusable nappies is a great way of doing this, but with such a big range of products on the market, some requiring quite an investment, it can be hard to know where to begin, and who to ask.

"This is where the HERTS Reusable Nappies scheme can help, as it gives easy access to all the information parents need, showcases the ranges of nappies and accessories available from our partnering suppliers, and offers a 15% discount to help with the upfront costs of making the switch. Our aim is to help find a nappy that’s a perfect fit for each baby in Hertfordshire.”
