The mayoral chains have been passed on to Councillor Alan Plancey as he took over from Brenda Batten in the prestigious role of Mayor of Hertsmere for the next year.

He was inaugurated at our annual council meeting last night (Wednesday 15 May), when the new Deputy Mayor, Cllr Cynthia Barker, was also welcomed.

At the meeting, former Mayor, Cllr Brenda Batten talked about the large number of engagements she had attended during her year as Mayor and of the fundraising events that had taken place in aid of her chosen charities, the Alzheimer’s Society and CLIC Sargent.

Brenda, who has now retired as a borough councillor, said: “It was an absolute honour to have served as Mayor of Hertsmere and it was the perfect way to round off the many years that I served as a borough councillor.

“I had the pleasure and privilege of visiting many different organisations and seeing for myself the hard work being invested, much of it voluntarily, by so many people across Hertsmere towards supporting their local communities.

“I was supported at many events by my husband John, who acted as Mayor’s Consort for the year.  I also had an excellent Deputy Mayor in Cllr Plancey. I wish him every success for his mayoral year ahead.”

Mayor Cllr Plancey added: “It’s a tremendous honour to serve as Mayor and am looking forward to all the engagements that are coming up.

“Over the next year I will be supporting the mental health charity Mind, as well as Camp Simcha which supports Jewish families living with serious childhood illness across the UK.

"I'm delighted to have the support of Cllr Cynthia Barker as Deputy Mayor.”

If you would like to invite the Mayor to attend one of your events, please contact the Mayor’s Secretary on 020 8207 7477 or email mayors.secretary@hertsmere.gov.uk

At the meeting, Cllr Morris Bright MBE was re-appointed as Leader of the Council and Cllr Caroline Clapper appointed as Deputy Leader.  For the opposition parties, it was noted that Cllr Jeremy Newmark is Leader of the Labour Group and Cllr Andrew Melville is Leader of the Liberal Democrat group.  Executive and committee members were also appointed.
