Start the day with apprenticeships
Last Modified September 12, 2017
Hertsmere business owners and managers can learn how to make the most of a new tax aimed at encouraging more apprenticeships at a free business breakfast this month.
Places are still available at the Apprenticeship breakfast for anyone interested in finding out more about the new Apprenticeship Levy. As part of the levy, all employers with a turnover of £3million a year or more are being charged 0.5 per cent of their wage bill. The funds are then made available, via a new digital account, to pay for training for apprentices from a recognised provider.
The breakfast, which is being held at Elstree Studios in Shenley Road, Borehamwood on Wednesday 27 September, has been organised by Hertsmere Borough Council, Watford and West Herts Chamber of Commerce and Together Training. Together Training is a dedicated training provider set up by Oaklands College and West Herts College and aimed at larger businesses.
Christine Lyons, our Head of Planning and Economic Development, said: “Apprenticeships are going to be increasingly important to the local and national economy.
“There is currently a skills gap in the labour market which means employers can sometimes struggle to fill vacancies. An apprenticeship can enable them to train their staff, so that they respond better to the needs and challenges of their business.
“While for young people apprenticeships are a great way to earn while they learn, especially as the cost of university continues to rise.
“This business breakfast is an opportunity to learn more about the Apprenticeship Levy and what it can do for your business, as well as hear first-hand about the benefits of apprenticeships.”
Zoe Hancock, Principal of Oaklands College, said: "These breakfast events are a great opportunity for the business community to learn more about the positive impact using the levy could have in terms of a talent pipeline and business growth.
"We will have staff on hand to talk businesses through the process to help make it as easy as possible to navigate and suitable for their specific needs. We really hope businesses take advantage of this event."
Speaking about the benefits of apprenticeships at the event will be an apprentice and an employer. The event will run from 7.15am until 9.30am. Hot and cold drinks, as well as a full continental breakfast will be provided.
