By-elections for each of the four vacancies at South Mimms Parish Council will be held next year, while a decision on who will be appointed to help keep the council running is expected this week.
A written request from 10 electors for each of the vacancies, created by the resignations of Paula Arnold, Neil Pumfrey and Mark Edwards, were received by our electoral services manager by last week’s deadlines. It has therefore been confirmed that by-elections will be held for these vacancies on 6 May 2021. A by-election had already been called on the same day to fill the vacancy left by Paul Binstead, who resigned earlier this year.
Ordinarily elections must be held within 60 days of these written requests. However due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, emergency legislation was passed postponing all elections and referendums next year.
Details on registering to vote deadlines, how to vote and candidates will be provided nearer the time. All election notices are published here. Currently only Cllr Yvonne Harverson remains on the parish council, as a result there is not the minimum number of members, known as quorum, able to conduct the business of the parish council.
Borough councillors will be asked at an upcoming full council meeting to appoint three temporary parish councillors in order to achieve a quorum, until such time as replacement parish councillors are elected and take up office.
All business at tomorrow's full council meeting (Wednesday 16 September) has been adjourned following the death of the Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Cynthia Barker, on Monday.
Meanwhile residents can register to vote at any time. For more information and to apply online here.
