A strategic way forward and key investment decisions to seize an even brighter future for Elstree Studios have been agreed.
A series of recommendations were approved at a Full Council meeting on Wednesday 20 September. These aim to both drive a longer-term strategy and way forward for the Studios, whilst also seeking much-needed investment into the Studios site which is a valuable council-owned asset.
The council agreed to establish a cross-party member and officer group to deliver these ambitious plans, assisted by an industry expert.
Funding for the demolition and rebuilding of stages 7, 8 and 9 was also agreed, as well as a package of on-going support to the Studios.
Last summer asbestos was discovered at stages 7, 8 and 9 following a routine inspection leading to their temporary closure on health and safety grounds. A failure of the roof structure has also been identified subsequently to be showing the presence of RAAC panels, leading to the decision that the most viable option was to demolish and rebuild those stages.
The Leader of the Council, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, said: “Elstree Studios continues to thrive and the award-winning Platinum Stages, which opened last year, clearly show that we’re committed to continued investment in this valuable asset for our borough and our residents.
"Whilst the financial outlay to the council will be significant, this initiative is key to ensuring the site remains competitive and aligned with emerging trends in the film and television industry. Elstree Studios also contributes to our revenue budget, which benefits residents across the borough.
"We acknowledge that the building works following the discovery of asbestos and subsequent issues with RAAC have had an impact on the studio's clients. We are doing all we can to mitigate those impacts."
The Full Council discussions were held in closed session as some of the details were commercially sensitive.
