Councillors' conduct and standards of behaviour

Last Modified November 07, 2017

When elected, all councillors have to sign an undertaking that they will observe our Code of Conduct. This ensures they maintain the high ethical standards the public expect from them.

Parish and town councils in the borough have also adopted a code of conduct.

If you are concerned that these standards have not been met you can make a complaint to our Standards Committee.  Your complaint will be assessed and, if there has been a breach of the Code of Conduct, there will be a detailed investigation.

If you believe that the conduct of a ward councillor or a member of one of the five parish/town councils in the borough may be in breach of our code, please contact us. Anonymous complaints will not be considered, and your identity will normally be disclosed to the committee, except in exceptional circumstances.

You can write to the Standards Committee, care of Democratic Services at our address below, or you can email:

You will need to give us as much information as possible to help us assess your complaint.
