WORLD CUP: Automatic Extensions for Licensed Premises
The government has introduced a contingent Licensing Hours Order covering premises in England and Wales. This order applies only to matches in the knock out rounds that involve England or Scotland.
Automatic extensions will apply as follows:
· The premises must already hold a premises licence authorising the sale of alcohol until 11pm.
· The match must involve England or Scotland.
· The match must be either one in the knock out stages (Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarter Final, Semi Finals, Third place play off, Final).
| Match Kick off time | Automatic Extension |
| Between 5pm and 9pm | From 11pm to 1am |
| Between 9pm and 10pm | From 11pm until 2am |
Theses extensions do not apply to matches in the group stages. The group stage matches kick off times are as follows:
17 June - 9pm
23 June – 9pm
27 June 10pm.
Premises must comply with their current licensed hours for the above matches or use a Temporary Event Notice.
Depending on where England and Scotland finish in the group stages some of the games may not be covered by the above extension. For instance some matches may kick off at midnight and 2am.
The extensions do not apply to any match that does not involve England or Scotland.
If you wish to be authorised to open for the sale of alcohol (and late night refreshment and regulated entertainment) at any time not covered by your premises licence or the above extensions, you will need to apply for a Temporary Event Notice.
APPLYING FOR A TEN
TENS require 10 working days notice to be given (not including day of receipt and day of the event – effectively 12 days’ notice).
Premises are entitled to serve a “Late” TEN on 2 occasions – giving at least 5 working days’ notice to the Council (not including day of receipt and day of the event – effectively 7days).
For instance, for the match kicking off on the 17 June a TEN would need to be served no later than: 2 June 2026 or a LATE TEN no later than 9 June 2026.
