Prevent
Prevent aims to reduce the threat to the UK from terrorism by stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It is a form of safeguarding, which sits outside of the criminal space, and its aim is to help those affected by terrorism. It addresses all forms of terrorism, including extreme right-wing, extreme left-wing anarchist and single issue terrorism and Islamist extremism.
How do we define terrorism and extremism?
Terrorism is “The use or threat of serious violence and damage to life, property, or public safety to advance a political, religious, racial, or ideological cause.”
Extremism is “The vocal or active opposition to our fundamental values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and the mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.”
When we talk of ‘radicalisation’ we are referring to the process of a person legitimising support for, or use of, terrorist violence. You may have concerns that something is not quite right with a person you know and spot some signs that they may be becoming radicalised. You can find out more about these signs on the Action Counters Terrorism website.
For more information, and awareness training, visit the Hertfordshire County Council website.
