Vote by proxy

Vote by proxy

If you cannot vote in person, you can ask someone you trust to vote on your behalf. This is called voting by proxy. You must be registered to vote before you apply.

Apply for a proxy vote

Apply on GOV.UK or contact Electoral Services if you need a paper form or help applying. Your proxy must be 18 or over, registered to vote and eligible to vote in the election. A person can act as proxy for up to four electors, of whom no more than two can be domestic electors. Domestic electors are voters who are neither overseas voters nor service voters. See the relevant election page for application deadlines.

What your proxy needs to do

Tell your proxy how you want them to vote. They’ll vote at your polling station and must take their own accepted photo ID when ID is required. They do not need your ID. If they cannot get to your polling station, contact Electoral Services about a postal proxy vote; this has an earlier deadline.

Change or cancel your proxy vote

Contact Electoral Services if you need to change your proxy or stop voting by proxy. There’s a deadline before an election, so get in touch as soon as your plans change.
