Announcement on the passing of Cllr Alan Plancey

A long-standing member of Hertsmere Borough Council has passed away over the weekend.

Cllr Rabbi Alan Plancey MBE died on Sunday (8 June). Cllr Plancey had been a borough councillor for the Borehamwood Brookmeadow ward since 2015 and served twice as the Mayor of Hertsmere. He was a Borehamwood County Councillor from 2009 to 2021 and, on his retirement from the county council, he was made an Honorary Alderman of the County.

In 2023 he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for Political and Public Service in the King's Birthday Honours list.

Outside of his work as a councillor, Cllr Plancey was a minister at Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue, was appointed Emeritus Rabbi in 2008 and was Chaplain to both the Police and to Luton Airport.

Sajida Bijle, Chief Executive of Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Cllr Alan Plancey. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and friends, and we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones at this difficult time.”

Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of the Council, said: “Cllr Plancey was a deeply committed public servant. His loss will be felt by many in the council and community. My thoughts are with his loved ones.”

Cllr Lynette Sullivan, Leader of the Hertsmere Conservative Group, said: “Cllr Plancey was a highly valued and cherished member of the council and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the residents of Borehamwood and the wider community. He will be greatly missed.”

Cllr Chris Shenton, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said: “My deepest sympathy to his loved ones. Cllr Plancey was a deeply committed councillor and member of our community, and will be missed by many.”

Cllr Marc Amron, Leader of the Hertsmere First Group, said: “Our deepest condolences to Cllr Plancey's family and friends. He will be greatly missed by the council and our communities.”
