Hertsmere Borough Council has welcomed the ‘ground-breaking’ of the new Jewish Life Centre in Borehamwood, describing it as a significant investment in the borough’s community town centre.
Residents, community representatives, and councillors from Hertsmere Borough Council attended the significant ceremony marking the beginning of development at the site on Shenley Road on Sunday, 22 February.
The building will be transformed into a modern community facility.
Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of the Council said:
“This former bank building sits at the heart of Borehamwood’s main high street. When we took the site into public ownership, our vision was of a thriving community hub at the heart of an increasingly mixed-use town centre.”
“I am proud that both Hertsmere Borough Council and Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council have committed a significant package of funding to this site. In addition to improving a public asset it will support the lasting and enduring impact that the centre will have on community relations and cohesion.”
“This project and the people who lead it will represent the best of Jewish values, the best of community values, the best of British values and the best of Borehamwood’s values.”
Rabbi Chaim Hoch, who together with his wife Leah leads the Jewish Life Centre, said:
“This building represents far more than bricks and mortar. It is the result of years of belief from this community. What began with a small marquee in a garden has grown into something much bigger, a permanent home for Jewish life in Borehamwood.”
Leah Hoch added:
“We are deeply encouraged by the breadth of support this project has received. From civic leaders to families, professionals, donors and volunteers, this must be a collective effort. No contribution of time, energy or support is too small. We will bring this vision to life together.”
