Work has officially begun on delivering new social rent housing in Borehamwood, with a ground breaking ceremony marking the start of construction at the former garage site on Catterick Way. The scheme will provide much needed affordable homes for local families.
This development marks a significant milestone for Hertsmere Borough Council, representing the first new build residential scheme in many years that is entirely for social rent and directly delivered by the council itself.
The development will deliver nine three-bedroom family flats for social rent, helping to meet growing demand for genuinely affordable housing in the borough. Three of the ground floor homes will include private gardens and will be fully adaptable for wheelchair users, supporting residents with mobility needs and promoting inclusive living.
The project will transform a derelict garage site into modern homes, enhancing the appearance of the area, with landscaping and secure cycle storage included as part of the plans.
By increasing the supply of social rent housing, the scheme will help reduce pressure on the housing waiting list and provide long-term stability for families in need. This project forms part of Hertsmere Borough Council's wider commitment to tackling the housing shortage, supporting residents most in need and creating safe, sustainable neighbourhoods for the future.
Councillor Alan Matthews, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Housing Development said:
"It's encouraging to see construction begin on these new homes, which will provide high quality accommodation for local families and ensure accessible housing is available for those who need it. Redeveloping this site will make a positive difference to the neighbourhood and deliver lasting benefits for residents."
Jeremy Newmark, Leader, Hertsmere Borough Council, added:
"Delivering more social rent homes is a key priority for this council, and this development is proof of that commitment in action. We are determined to play our part in the government's national mission to build 1.5 million homes during this Parliament.
"Every home we build is another step forward in ensuring that residents and families across Hertsmere have access to a safe, decent and secure place to call home."
Ken Adams, Managing Director, LIFE Build Solutions said:
"LIFE Build are proud to be working in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council to deliver this most important scheme. This project reflects what can be achieved when strong partnerships come together with a shared purpose.
"We at LIFE Build are proud to be playing our part in strengthening this community, and we look forward to handing over homes that will serve local families for many years to come."
