Bringing Hertsmere’s communities together following India air crash tragedy

The Mayor of Hertsmere led a moving ceremony yesterday (Thursday 19 June), paying respects and honouring the memory of those who tragically lost their lives in the air crash in India, one week on.

Mayor Cllr Alpha Bird Collins was joined by elected members, council staff, faith leaders and residents at the moving ceremony outside Hertsmere’s Civic Offices. Dignitaries were invited to light candles and lay white roses as a mark of respect, a minute’s silence was observed and the council’s flag was flown at half-mast as a further tribute.

Mayor Cllr Collins, speaking at the event, said: “In the wake of such a devastating tragedy, it can bring us comfort to join together as a community to mourn, reflect and stand in solidarity with the families and loved ones of the victims.

“I am sure you join with me in extending the sincerest of condolences to the families, friends and communities across the world who have been affected by this terrible tragedy.”
