Hertsmere Borough Council has launched a Community Governance Review (CGR) for Potters Bar following a petition from local residents requesting the creation of a parish council for the area.
The review was agreed by councillors at Full Council and gives residents, businesses and community organisations the opportunity to share their views on whether a parish council should be established for Potters Bar.
A Community Governance Review is a legal process that allows councils to consider changes to local governance arrangements to ensure they continue to reflect the identities and interests of local communities.
Parish councils may organise events for their community, take care of parks, play areas and allotments and represent the views and aspirations of the community.
If established a parish council would be funded through a parish precept, which is an amount added to council tax bills to support local services and facilities.
Residents, businesses, community groups, and people who work in the borough are now being invited to take part in the first stage of the consultation which runs through to 8 June, 2026.
Letters have been sent to all residents in Potters Bar.
Following the consultation, responses will be reviewed and draft recommendations will be published on the way forward, and a second consultation on those recommendations will take place from 1 July to 23 August.
Cllr Chris Gray, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods, Enforcement, Economic Development and Transformation said:
“We would encourage residents, businesses and and community organisations to take part in the review when it starts and share their views.
“It is important that any future arrangements reflect the needs, identify and priorities of the Potters Bar community.”
