Hertsmere Borough Council has approved plans to progress the redevelopment of the former Bushey Golf & Country Club site, marking a significant milestone in plans to deliver new homes, community facilities and publicly accessible green space for local residents.
The plans include 250 new homes, half being affordable, alongside a new community hub, retail and nursery facilities. Around 60% of the site would become public open space, giving residents access to green space and recreational areas.
Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, said:
"I’m thrilled that we have delivered this long-awaited important step towards reopening this site that has remained vacant for far too long. This land-swap will see sixty per cent of the land kept green, made public, and kept forever.
It also delivers much-needed affordable homes alongside new community facilities and extensive accessible green space.
The scheme passes all of the seven tests that were agreed by our cross-party task force.
For every pound of public money we invest in this project, Bushey will get a return of ten pounds worth of new community infrastructure. We will now work with the developers and continue to engage with residents to get this built out on budget and on schedule.”
Cllr Chris Shenton, Portfolio Holder for Finance, and Deputy Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council said:
“I am delighted that Council has committed to delivering this development that has been planned for 8 years. This project safeguards the majority of the site as open space and will deliver a new Community Hub and great new supermarket for the town. The alternative was to sell the whole site for housing, an outcome I’m sure the people of Bushey wouldn’t want.”
The council will now work with its development partners to progress the next phase of the project, including the submission of a planning application and continued engagement with local residents and stakeholders.
