National Empty Homes Week

Hertsmere Borough Council is marking National Empty Homes Week by reaffirming its commitment to bring empty properties back into use across the borough.

Cllr Alan Matthews, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Housing Development said:

“Empty homes are a wasted resource at a time when housing demand continues to grow.

“Through our Empty Homes Strategy we are committed to working with owners to bring these properties back into use so they can once again provide homes for people and benefit our communities.”

“The number of empty homes in Hertsmere peaked at 1,364 in 2022. Since mid-2023 the council has been working actively to reduce this target. We reduced this total by 27.3% by the end of 2024. Despite market uncertainties resulting in a slight increase in 2025 the current level remains significantly below the 2022 peak.”

Residents who are aware of a long term empty property are encouraged to report it to our Housing Enforcement and Licensing Team at private.sector@hertsmere.gov.uk who will investigate, provide advice to owners and ensure appropriate action is taken.

Increasing Council Tax levies are charged on homes left vacant for more than 12 months (limited exemptions including those awaiting probate).
