Hertsmere Borough Council is marking Black History Month with a number of events including exhibitions and a creative workshop for families.

We are hosting two free exhibitions during October. ‘Stories of Windrush’ will be displayed in the café area at 96 Shenley Road, Borehamwood and our ‘Unsung Heroes’ exhibition will be displayed in the café area at Wyllyotts Theatre, Potters Bar.

In addition, a special launch event for families will be held at 96 Shenley Road this coming Saturday, 4 October, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm, with free arts and crafts and African drumming workshops.

Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Alpha Collins said:

Every year, we are proud to celebrate our incredibly diverse borough and workforce. Black History Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by the Black community and for everyone to stand in solidarity with the fight for equality, acceptance and human rights.

Black History Month provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of the African and Caribbean communities in the UK. It’s a moment to honour those who have fought for equality, social justice, and freedom — those who laid the foundation for a more inclusive and fair society.

In addition to our events, there is a big Diversity Festival taking place in Borehamwood on 25 October and 26 October with free admission. Organised by the Borehamwood and Elstree Unity Network, the two-day celebration will have a wide range of music and dance performers, art competitions, raffles and much more.

On the Sunday there will be big community lunch - an international food buffet (bring and share). For more information please visit: Diversity Festival
