Hertsmere celebrates Pride Month

We are marking Pride Month by showing strong and unwavering support to the borough’s LGBTQ+ communities.

With June being Pride Month, the Pride Progress flag was raised outside the Civic Offices in Borehamwood on Monday (9 June) by the Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Alpha Bird Collins, who was joined by council staff, fellow councillors, and colleagues from the NHS, Hertfordshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust’s (HPFT) Rainbow Network and representatives from Herts Pride and Hertfordshire-based LGBTQ+ charity Impactful Lives.

Pride Progress is an updated version of the rainbow Pride flag, featuring more colours and symbols to represent all LGBTQ+ communities. Flags to mark Pride Month have also been raised in Oakmere Park and Parkfield, both in Potters Bar, and King George Recreation Ground in Bushey.

The Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Alpha Bird Collins, was joined by council staff, fellow councillors, and colleagues from a number of organisations for a ceremony to mark Pride Month at the Civic Offices in Borehamwood on Monday (9 June).

Mayor Cllr Collins said: “Every year, we are proud to celebrate our incredibly diverse borough and workforce. Pride Month is also an opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and for everyone to stand in solidarity with the fight for equality, acceptance and human rights.

“As always, Pride Month is about building and nurturing a society in which everyone feels accepted and equal. It is also about celebrating the vitally important work of LGBTQ+ people and education in LGBTQ+ history as well as, vitally, raising awareness of issues still affecting LGBTQ+ communities.”

We are again sponsoring Herts Pride, with this year’s event at Watford’s Cassiobury Park on Saturday 30 August, and will have a stall in the wellbeing tent to speak to residents and LGBTQ+ members of the community about our services.
