The Mayor of Hertsmere led a tribute to the armed forces community as part of a special event to mark Armed Forces Day.
Mayor Councillor Alpha Bird Collins led a flag-raising ceremony outside our Civic Offices on Thursday (26 June), ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday 28 June.
The Mayor was joined by representatives of de Havilland Aircraft Museum who were on hand to answer questions about the museum’s displays and long-standing connections with the armed forces.
Mayor Cllr Collins was also delighted to welcome Brian Dee from the Royal British Legion. Hertsmere borough councillors and staff also gathered for the ceremony.
We are board members of the Hertfordshire Armed Forces Covenant and are committed to showing support for those in the armed forces community.
Mayor Cllr Collins commented: “It was an absolute privilege to lead this ceremony and pay tribute to our serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets. I was also delighted that de Havilland was represented at the ceremony, testament to their long-standing connections with Hertsmere.”
Leader of the Council, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, added: “The event also provides an opportunity to recognise the sacrifice, dedication and commitment of our armed forces.
“We will be flying the Armed Forces flag outside our offices all week to show our thanks and appreciation for the armed forces community.”
Armed Forces Day aims to raise public awareness of the contribution made by those who serve or have served in the armed forces, as well as those who support them.
