Hertsmere commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day

The Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Alpha Collins, will lead a poignant ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday 27 January.

The event will provide an opportunity to pause to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The event will commence with a procession from the Hertsmere Civic Offices to the Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood, where a ceremony will take place. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from speaker Maralyn Turgel, who will be sharing her father's experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust. The event will also include a performance by a choir and a candle lighting ceremony led by local dignitaries.

Councillor Jeremy Newmark, Leader of the Council said:

This will be an opportunity to remember the victims of man’s greatest inhumanity to man and subsequent genocides in more recent history. We’re proud that our Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations will focus on young people and educating the next generation because ultimately, that is how we turn the cry of “Never Again” into reality.”

Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Alpha Collins said:

The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day this year is Bridging Generations, highlighting the importance of learning from the past to build a safer and better future for all. Join us in this important commemoration as we reflect on history and commit to fostering a world free from hatred and discrimination.”

The service will be broadcast live online from 6pm:
