Councillor Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, welcomed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to Hertsmere yesterday, Thursday 28 November.
The Prime Minister visited Bushey Synagogue to hear directly from members of the community about the growing threat of antisemitism and threats to community cohesion, in areas like Hertsmere.
The Prime Minister spent time with schoolchildren, students and mothers, who shared their experiences and challenges they and their families are facing.
Following the discussions, the Prime Minister met privately with Cllr Newmark to reflect on what he had heard, and to discuss the work that the council had embarked upon across Hertsmere to support and strengthen community relations in the borough.
Speaking after the meeting Cllr Newmark said:
“The Prime Minister was visibly and profoundly affected by the testimonies he heard, and was very encouraging about the work we are doing here in Hertsmere to support our communities, and strengthen cohesion across the borough.
“The Prime Minister was particularly supportive of projects we are supporting to leverage Hertsmere’s screen arts heritage and expertise to use the medium of film to promote positive community relations. We are incredibly grateful that the Prime Minister took the time to visit Hertsmere today and for the meaningful way that he engaged with groups of local residents.”
