Habitat Banks

Biodiversity Gain Sites, which are more commonly referred to as 'habitat banks', are an important part of the Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) system.

A habitat bank is an area of land where a program of habitat creation and/or enhancement has achieved an uplift in biodiversity value - measured in 'biodiversity units'. When developers cannot meet their 10% BNG obligation on-site and do not have their own land outside the development to meet it, they may buy these ‘biodiversity units’ from habitat banks.
