Council staff show support to struggling families at Christmas

Last Modified December 19, 2023

Staff at Hertsmere Borough Council have rallied together to donate hundreds of grocery items to local foodbanks to aid families struggling with their finances this Christmas.

Colleagues based at the Civic Offices were encouraged to donate to Borehamwood, Potters Bar and Red Trust Bushey foodbanks in time for their festive collections.

Items ranging from tinned food, pasta and sauces to crisps and biscuits have been delivered by staff to the foodbanks.

Sajida Bijle, Manager Director for Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “Donating food fosters a sense of community and togetherness and at the council, we work hard to support our local communities.

“Christmas is a joyful time of year for many, but can also bring the challenge of increased financial pressures, which is why it is so important to support our foodbanks at this time in particular.

“Our staff donated generously to the local foodbanks and they are a credit to the council. We hope these donations offer some relief to those in need this Christmas.”

Julian Milner, Chair of Borehamwood Foodbank, said: “At Borehamwood Foodbank, we continue to witness elevated demand for our services from the most vulnerable citizens from all communities within Hertsmere.

“Once again, this Christmas will be exceptionally busy for us as we help bring some much welcome joy to those who are struggling. We are so grateful to all our supporters and volunteers who help us in our mission to alleviate food poverty and who ensure that our vital work can carry on.”

Council staff were also invited to support local families this Christmas by taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, where donations were doubled for a week, as well as being invited to volunteer at the food collection at Tesco, Borehamwood organised by Borehamwood Foodbank.
