An 'aspirational, green new deal for Hertsmere' pledged by our new leadership

Our new leadership was announced at our Annual Meeting of the Council on Wednesday evening (17 May).

Our political leadership of the authority comprises both Labour and Liberal Democrat members who have pledged to deliver ‘serious, stable and transformational leadership’ following the local elections on 4 May.

Cllr Jeremy Newmark, representing Hertsmere’s Labour and Co-operative Party, takes the helm as Leader of the Council, with Cllr Paul Richards from the Liberal Democrats taking on the role of Deputy Leader.

Cllr Newmark commented: “I’m delighted that local people have paved the way for a new leadership to deliver an aspirational green new deal for Hertsmere.

“We’re committed to building a new model of leadership for the council that reflects the political plurality that our residents expressed in the May 2023 local elections.

“In the coming weeks we will be working together with the council’s senior officers, to set out the details of a new, progressive path for the borough of Hertsmere.

“I look forward to engaging in meaningful consultation with our communities to shape our developing policies and key themes in the very near future.  I’m incredibly excited about being able to bring genuine people-powered leadership to this authority.”

Cllr Richards added: “We are committed to delivering serious and transformational leadership together through this stable partnership which will be based upon both principles and pragmatism. Our shared focus from listening to communities across Hertsmere, when setting an agenda for the future, is illustrated in the carefully considered choices for executive portfolios.  These reflect political balance, skills and experience drawn from across the partnership as well as including those who bring fresh experience from beyond the local government arena.”
