THIS SCHEME IS NOW OPEN. IT WILL CLOSE 11:59PM ON SUNDAY 17TH MAY 2026.
In order to reflect the aspirations set out in the new Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy (2025 - 2030), the Council’s Carbon Reduction Grant Scheme is offering funding to support local community projects that help tackle climate change.
Grants of up to £5,000 are available for capital costs for projects that specifically reduce emissions and help mitigate climate change.
This could include reducing energy use, generating clean energy, planting trees, or helping people live more sustainably. We’re especially interested in projects that benefit the local community and create healthier, greener neighbourhoods. You don’t need to be an expert—if your idea can make a real difference and you can show how it will work, we want to hear from you.
Any properly constituted group, club or organisation, which is based in, or operates for the benefit of, residents of Hertsmere. All organisations, groups or clubs must have a bank account in the organisation name that requires at least two signatories who are unrelated.
Businesses based in, or operates for the benefit of, residents of Hertsmere.
Priority will be given to organisations based in and around Hertsmere and delivering activities or services to the people of Hertsmere.
We are looking for simple, effective projects that lower carbon emissions—such as saving energy, using clean energy, planting trees, or helping people adopt more sustainable lifestyles. Projects should benefit the local community and contribute to healthier, greener neighbourhoods.
This funding supports the goals set out in the Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy (2025 – 2030). The scheme is funded through contributions from developers (known as Section 106 funding), which are used to help offset carbon emissions from new developments
We are particularly looking for projects and initiatives that:
• Deliver quantifiable carbon savings
• Involve capital improvements (not just behaviour change)
• Provide long-term emission reductions
Some examples are shared below:
Community Building Energy Improvements - Installing insulation, LED lighting, or energy-efficient heating in village halls, community centres, or local clubs to reduce energy use.
Solar Panels on Community Buildings - Adding solar panels to roofs of schools, community centres, or sports pavilions to generate clean, renewable energy.
Solar Battery Storage Systems - Adding battery storage to existing or new solar panel systems to maximise on-site use of renewable energy and reduce reliance on grid electricity.
Tree Planting and Green Spaces - Planting trees or creating small community woodlands to absorb carbon and improve local air quality.
Community Gardens and Food Growing Projects - Supporting local food growing to reduce food miles and encourage sustainable lifestyles.
Cargo e-bikes, Bike Storage and Active Travel Facilities - Installing secure bike racks or shelters to encourage walking and cycling instead of car use.
Repair Cafés or Reuse Projects - Setting up community repair workshops to reduce waste and extend the life of everyday items.
Library of things - Setting up and running a library of things such as thermal imaging cameras, tools and household items.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Points (Community Use) - Installing EV charging points at community venues to support the transition to low-emission transport.
All applications must demonstrate that they engage with or benefit Hertsmere residents and applications with match funding will be considered favourably, but this is not essential.
