Even more homes could be eligible for a Home Upgrade Grant

Last Modified April 25, 2024

The Home Upgrade Grant has expanded its eligibility criteria to reach more low-income households.

Hertsmere Borough Council, in partnership with The Greater South East Net Zero Hub, is pleased to announce an update to the eligibility criteria for the Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 (HUG2), aimed at providing energy efficiency and clean heating upgrades to low-income households across the borough.

Responding to feedback and a thorough review of the program, the Department of Energy and Sustainable Net Zero (DESNZ) has increased the household income threshold to £36,000, up from £31,000, to ensure that more families can benefit from this vital initiative.

The expanded eligibility criteria is anticipated to increase the number of eligible households by approximately 19% nationally within the scheme. This means more families will have access to the support they need to improve energy efficiency, reduce fuel poverty and contribute to the UK’s Net Zero commitment by 2050.

The Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 addresses the pressing need to upgrade inefficient off-gas grid heated homes, with a focus on those in the most deprived areas, helping them transition to cleaner and more sustainable heating solutions.

Cllr Paul Richards, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Sustainability and Net Zero and Public Health, said: "We are committed to helping eligible households to access the Home Upgrade Grant. By expanding eligibility, we are opening doors for more families to benefit from energy-efficient upgrades, ultimately improving living conditions and reducing energy bills.

“The Home Upgrade Grant is a key step towards improving our most energy inefficient homes. It aims to target low-income households helping them save money and reduce fuel poverty, whilst also cutting carbon as we work towards our 2050 Net Zero commitment. Increasing the household income threshold means more people can benefit from the grants. I’d encourage everyone in Hertsmere to check if they are eligible to receive help from the scheme.”

Local Authorities will continue to work to ensure residents  are aware of the changes and understand how they may be eligible for the scheme. Further information will be provided through various channels, including our website, and residents are encouraged to reach out to their local authority for assistance.
