Making everyday journeys more sustainable

Last Modified December 04, 2023

We’re hoping to make it easier for you to walk, wheel or cycle in Hertsmere and need your help.

Residents, businesses and community groups can help shape a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) for Hertsmere.

Hertsmere Borough Council is working in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council, the highways authority, in drawing up the plan.

We want to identify important local routes for people walking, using a wheelchair or riding a bike to go to work, school or to carry out other everyday trips in the borough, as well as what barriers you face walking or cycling.

This will form part of our new LCWIP, which sets out ideas for creating safer pavements, footpaths, pedestrian crossings and cycle routes in key locations in Hertsmere. The aim is to make walking and cycling the natural choice for shorter journeys or part of longer journeys.

Cllr Nik Oakley, Portfolio Holder for Planning Infrastructure and Transport, said: “We want cycling and walking to be an easy and convenient choice for people living, working and visiting Hertsmere.

“We are committed to tackling climate change and encouraging more journeys by walking and cycling rather than by car is one of the many actions we are taking to achieve that. Creating safer walking and cycling routes will not only help to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents, but will help lower air pollution and reduce traffic in our borough.

"Hearing from our local communities is vital to the success of the project and your feedback will help us to identify these important local routes and suggest ways to improve them, making them safer for you."

Councillor Phil Bibby, HCC’s Executive Member for Highways and Transport, said: “Receiving feedback on our proposed cycling and walking plan for Hertsmere is key to helping develop a framework that provides a greener and safer way to travel.

“Our aim is to offer all residents a cleaner, greener, healthier Hertfordshire. By increasing access to cycling and walking initiatives, we'll help to improve health and air quality, as well as reducing traffic congestion.”

Over the next few months, officers from Hertsmere and the county council will review existing routes and local data to identify important routes, followed by engagement activities with local communities to help us identify required improvements.

The interactive engagement activities are due to start next year, but you can sign up now to be keep updated of the plans
