The Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Chris Myers, will lead a candlelit parade and ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day later this month and everyone is welcome to attend.
The event will provide an opportunity to pause to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The event will take place on Thursday 25 January. The candlelit parade will travel from Manor Road Car Park, Potters Bar, starting at 6pm, along to the Wyllyotts Theatre, where a ceremony will take place to include videos, speakers and musical performances.
Fragility of Freedom is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2024.
Mayor Cllr Myers said: “I am honoured to be leading such an important event for our borough. Freedom means different things to different people. This year’s theme gives us an opportunity to reflect and learn from events in history where freedoms have been eroded, with appalling consequences.
“The Holocaust and following genocides that took place in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur are some of the darkest times in human history and cannot be forgotten. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
“I hope to see many join me in remembrance of the millions who have tragically lost their lives as a result of discrimination and hate.”
