Call out to EU nationals in Hertsmere

Last Modified January 15, 2021

More than 8,500 EU citizens living in Hertsmere have applied for an immigration status, the latest figures have revealed.

Community leaders in the borough are encouraging all EU nationals, including those from the European Economic Area or Switzerland, to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if they want to protect their rights and the rights of their family to stay in the UK. The call comes just a few weeks after the EU transition period ended and less than six months before the deadline for settlement scheme applications ends.

According to figures released by the Home Office last year, 8,700 applications have been made by people living in Hertsmere, of which 1,100 applications were for youngsters aged under 18; 7,400 from 18 to 64 year olds and 280 from over 65s.

Our leader, Councillor Morris Bright MBE said: “While the number of applications is very encouraging, we want to ensure all our residents who are EU, EEA or Swiss nationals, are aware of the need to apply.

“Even if you have lived in the UK for many years or have a permanent residence document, you still need to apply for settled status. This is also true for children.

“Hertsmere is an attractive place to live, work or study for people from around the world – and we value the contribution of all our communities and cultures to the borough."

Deputy leader, Councillor Caroline Clapper, said: “Hertsmere prides itself on its vibrancy and diversity.

“That is why it’s vital that citizens from the EU, EEA or Switzerland ensure their right to live, work and study in the UK is protected by applying for EU Settled Status as soon as possible.

“It is a straightforward process. You can apply online using a computer, tablet or mobile phone, or, if you need support with your application, call Hertsmere Citizens Advice on 0208 167 2858 or call the EU Settlement Resolution Centre on 0300 123 7379.”

As part of the process, applicants will need to have proof of their identity and proof that they live in the UK. They will also be asked to declare any criminal convictions.

The deadline for applications is 30 June 2021. For more information, go here.
