The future of a prominent building in Borehamwood has been secured by Hertsmere Borough Council.
The council has purchased 80 Shenley Road as part of its plan to create a vibrant and sustainable town centre.
The commercial land and building, adjacent to The Point which the council owns, has sat empty for over six months since the previous occupants, NatWest, vacated.
The purchase of 80 Shenley Road and surrounding land will form an important part of the council’s future plans to regenerate the town centre. In the short term the council aims to modernise the commercial building to let to the right occupiers to enhance the high street.
Cllr Christian Gray, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Neighbourhoods, Enforcement, Economic Development and Transformation, said: "This is an exciting proposition for the borough as we move forward with our long term regeneration ambitions for Borehamwood.
"We believe it's important to be creative and ambitious about reimagining the town centre to cultivate a vibrant and attractive offering - not just for tourists and visitors, but for our residents also. The property is situated in a core area of the town centre and has the potential to contribute significantly to the regeneration of Borehamwood town centre in the future."
The decision to buy the building was approved by Full Council in April 2023 and the transaction has recently been completed. The project is funded from existing earmarked reserves and the Innovation and Investment Fund reserve.
