Consultation under way on Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing

Last Modified August 06, 2021

Hackney carriages and private hire vehicles are an important part of local transport provision and Hertsmere Borough Council is responsible for ensuring the public is safe when using this mode of transport.

Our officers check drivers, operators and the vehicles to ensure public safety.

We are currently consulting on a draft Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy.

The council has responsibility for licensing Hackney carriage and private hire drivers, proprietors and operators within Hertsmere. The policy aims to ensure both the trade and the public have ready access to a document that fully explains our licensing requirements.

Cllr Sarah Hodgson-Jones, Chair of the council's Licensing Committee, said: "The industry has undergone significant change in the last few years with the development of smartphone apps used for booking and cross border hiring, not to mention the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We want our policy to balance the safety of the public with the desire to encourage our licensed trade to flourish.  To do that we need the views of the public and the trade operators.

“As a council we have an important role to play in ensuring the trade offers a reliable, safe, modern taxi and private hire fleet and provides protection for the public using the service.”

Members of the public are encouraged to complete this survey: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/DFVSVKT and in addition, any person with a disability can help us assess whether our policy needs to take further steps to provide equality of transport by completing this additional survey: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/CKC5WBP
